I graduated from TCU, in 1988, where our mascot is the Horned Frog, another name for a horned toad. when I sculpted my horned toads I wanted them to have a bit of attitude. But I wasn't just drawn to the horned toad because of the TCU connection. The horned toad is the state reptile of Texas. Sadly they are very rare in my part of the state today. However when I was a boy I had a pet horned toad which I kept in an aquarium in my bedroom. I'll never forget one day coming home and finding it empty. I looked all over my room to find it before finally telling my mom that he was loose in the house. I knew she wouldn't like that at all. However she came to help look and we finally realized he was still in the aquarium, just burrowed under the sand. I kept him a long time, feeding him red ants that I caught, and then released him. He was the last living horned toad that I have seen outside of a zoo.
