This is the bookstore Shakespeare and Company, located in the heart of Paris on the banks of the Seine, opposite Notre Dame. Since opening in 1951, it has been a meeting place for writers such as Hemingway, Stein, and Fitzgerald. I stood in this room captivated by the beauty of the afternoon light and knew I had to paint it . The window in this room looks out on the entrance of Notre Dame Cathedral. The backpack on the bench is mine filled with my sketching supplies. I decided to leave that in the composition to tell the story of an artist visiting Paris for the first time.
